Film Project Response

I really enjoyed the film project. I know that as an English teacher, films can serve as a great accompaniment to a text. Movies, as with acting out a scene, serve to help the students understand a reading with greater clarity. At times, it allows them to finally have that "ah ha" moment when they have been struggling to decipher a character's motives or development. It also serves as a great vessel to convey the various ways a single text may be interpreted. Plus, in all honesty, they are just plain fun for the students. And sometimes, fun is what you need more of in the classroom. A child that is interested is likely a child that is motivated, and a motivated child is going to be learning. Isn't this the goal of education? I certainly think so.

That being said, I thought it was a great experience to search out a clip for To Kill a Mockingbird, which is a novel I very well may teach in the future. It was fun to imagine the types of conversations it may spark in the classroom and the insight it may grant my students. I only hope that the school I end up working in also sees the benefit of incorporating films into the curriculum.
